Policy of Admission for Students with Degrees other than Chemical Engineering

Students seeking admission to the graduate program with degrees† other than Chemical Engineering may be admitted to the department on a case-by-case basis. The minimum requirements for admission of these students should be a undergraduate GPA of 3.6 and GRE scores in the verbal and quantitative parts of 500 and 730 (taken before 8/1/11), respectively or 153 and 157 (taken after 8/1/11). At the discretion of the Graduate Committee and the Department Head, students meeting the minimum requirements may be offered admission and financial assistantship.

All graduate students enrolled in the program are required to successfully complete core graduate chemical engineering courses, which include subjects in Thermodynamics, Kinetics, and Transport Phenomena, and Mathematics. Students with degrees other than chemical engineering may be deficient in chemical engineering fundamentals that provide the foundation for the core graduate chemical engineering courses. Therefore, non-chemical engineering students planning to join the graduate program are strongly encouraged to acquire the necessary background prior to enrollment or expected to take remedial courses* once enrolled (to be determined by the Graduate Committee). At a minimum, these students must have proficiency in Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations. § After evaluation of the student's academic transcripts, the Graduate Committee will communicate to the student in the offer letter the expected requirements, including suggestions for additional courses if needed, so the student is clearly aware of his/her expectations to successfully progress through the graduate program. In the case the Graduate Committee suggests remedial courses and the student elects to bypass them, it will be the student’s responsibility to make for any deficiency to satisfactorily complete the required core graduate chemical engineering courses.

Once enrolled, students must complete the course requirements and maintain a grade average of B or better in the core graduate courses and B+ or better in any remedial courses specified by the Graduate Committee. Non-compliance with the admission policies may results in ineligibility for further financial assistance and possible termination of the graduate contract.

Non-chemical engineering students planning to apply to the graduate program are strongly encouraged to contact the Graduate Program Director early in the application process to go over the requirements and discuss his/her specific case.

† Acceptable degrees in Chemistry, Physics, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, or other engineering disciplines
